The Gap

“We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.” Hebrews 6:19

Have you ever been there? I'm sure most, if not all, of us have. And no, I don’t mean the store, although I’m sure most of us have been there, too. Standing in the gap can feel lonely, isolating, vulnerable. You're in no man's land, barren, struggling against the current, often gripping on by your fingertips, grinding away in the hopes to join together two forces across the expanse: reality and your deepest desire of what you hope to be reality.

I say lonely because not many people are willing to be out there in the gap with you. They are believers in the reality; they don't want you to be disappointed; they don't have faith in the hope. But you're determined. Determined to fight for the dream, or the promise, that's been planted in your heart. So you remain in the gap. It can be utterly exhausting.

But you are not there alone. He said when you were weak He would be strong. When you are weary He will uphold you. When you are tired you may rest in His wings. He said He will fully equip you and sustain you and most importantly He will be WITH you. Afterall, that is what Jesus does for all mankind - He stands in that gap so that we may have full life. God knows when we need tangible support. There are moments when He sends precious friends or members of your family, who feel like angels for they refresh your exhausted spirit, that are willing to take up your plea and stand in the gap with you. These people are invaluable. Accept their help.

I don't write this to paint a picture of misery, I write it to paint a picture of faith and gratitude. I write it because very often I have felt overwhelmed by the burden, only to have it lifted by a divine appointment with someone reaching out. Pounding the gates of heaven, praying for something that seems out of reach, choosing to ignore reality and believe God will do the seemingly impossible, that is where faith is built, refined, and sharpened. That is where we discover just how GOOD and gracious God is because without Him we have no hope, let alone can sustain it. And it is in this time that the beauty of His blessings shine brightest. We deserve none of it, but He gives it lovingly.

I've had some prayers answered after years of standing in the gap for them and there are still some things I'm standing, believing in prayer for. If you're standing in that gap for something, you're not alone. God is with you, He is with me, and I will gladly stand with you, too. “But we are not those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who believe and are saved.” Hebrews 10:39
